SEED Improved Jeff's Grades and Increased His Savings

By 14 Jeff Word had been a member of the Delaware Boys and Girls Club for many years. At an early age he unexpectedly lost his mother to illness; during that year, Jeff struggled to cope with his loss, and was ultimately held back a year in school. Since then, Jeff learned to cope with the circumstances of his mother’s untimely death, and participated in several Club programs, including the SEED program.

Jeff ’s father, a retired railroad worker, believed that the Club had a significant positive impact on Jeff and ultimately improved his outlook on life since his mother’s death. During Jeff ’s time in the program, he rewarded Jeff with $20 for every A he earned in school and $10 for every B – Jeff used this money for SEED deposits. However, if Jeff received a grade lower than a C, he lost money. Through hard work and determination, Jeff developed into an A student – not to mention a high saver! Through the SEED program, Jeff learned valuable financial literacy skills and saved $2,400 in his SEED account, and his grades improved so much that he was on the Honor Roll every marking period. Jeff planned to use his savings toward furthering his education after high school.
