Over the next week or so, I’ll be featuring Innovative Idea Champions who presented their exciting ideas at the 2009 Innovation Summit, October 29, 2009 in Washington, DC. Following the conference, each of the Champions provided the innovation@cfed Team their “Top Takeaways,” the three or so things they walked away with that truly highlighted the utility of the Summit. The full text of each innovator’s Takeaways will be available on the innovation@cfed Web site soon, but for now, we wanted to feature those that really captured the unique nature of the Summit.

Today I have included the remarks from Henry Red Cloud. Henry is founder of Lakota Solar Enterprises in Pine Ridge, SD. Henry’s innovation, Solar Heating = Lower Costs and Native Jobs, involves building the Red Cloud Renewable Energy Center (RCREC) as a training facility for tribes to learn about renewable energy applications from Native Americans. Henry’s top takeaways from the Summit are as follows:

1. The appreciation, support and guidance received from Summit participants was great; participants were interested in my project and every aspect of my business ideas. I was impressed with others who are making a difference with their innovations, whether that difference is big or small.

2. I am grateful for all the ideas shared during the breakout sessions with others working in my field. I found that the information I received was very beneficial and will enable me to become more productive in my future business endeavors.

3. The number of people from different nations and walks of life who came together to support a positive event was compelling to me. There was so much positive energy and it was so great to see other Lakotas honored at this event. I was also impressed with the Friedman family’s presentation at CFED’s 30th Anniversary Gala on the evening after the Summit. It was very emotional, motivational and inspiring to see how Mr. Friedman honored the women in his family.

I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m noticing a theme here – the Summit simply would not have been a success if the innovators did not have a dynamic group of participants off of which they could bounce their ideas. Everyone seems to have really enjoyed the interactions they had, and Henry’s Takeaways demonstrate just how valuable everyone’s input was.

innovation@cfed extends a special “thank you” to Henry for providing such thoughtful insight! Check back in the next few days to see what other innovators had to say!
