Today we feature another one of our 2009 Innovation Summit presenters, Najib Jammal. Najib, inspired by the potential of Baltimore-area youth and the belief in real-world learning opportunities for his students, created a non-profit organization, Youth Organizing Urban Revitalization Systems (YOURS). YOURS is dedicated to helping young people start community-based businesses.

Najib’s innovation, Entrepreneurship in High School, unleashes the energy and potential of young people by connecting education, entrepreneurship and community revitalization in community-owned cooperative undertakings. He is on track to become principal of a Baltimore public high school that will use entrepreneurship as the key to students’ academic and economic success. His top takeaways from the Summit are:

1. The connections made at the Summit were incredible. The format made everything very interactive, allowing for participants, hosts and visitors to share thoughts and ideas.

2. The idea exchange facilitated through the three burning questions created an opportunity for engagement between participants. I found key information and gained useful insight from people living across the country with knowledge or ideas that could help support his project.

3. The opportunity to hear from innovation leaders was inspiring to me as I gained insight into their journeys. In particular, I enjoyed the Design Challenge portion of the Summit where I worked on a team with other innovation leaders to address areas of critical concern.

Overall, I was very impressed with the Summit and the opportunity to participate. One challenge I encountered at the Summit was the vast amount of material being covered in a constrained amount of time.

innovation@cfed is grateful not only for Najib’s kind words about the Innovation Summit, but also for providing input about what challenges he faced. We’ll use that information as we plan upcoming gatherings of innovators, and we offer a special thanks to Najib for his insights!
