New Board and Staff Leadership for CFED

CFED is pleased to announce a number of exciting leadership transitions among our Board of Directors and senior staff. First, our Board of Directors has elected Brandee McHale, President of the Citi Foundation, to serve as CFED’s next Chairperson of the Board. Brandee, a longtime CFED Board member, philanthropic leader and staunch supporter of asset-building innovations, was the Board’s unanimous choice to take up the extraordinary mantle of leadership built by current Chair and Founder Bob Friedman. In addition to Brandee’s appointment, the Board of Directors also unanimously elected Asheesh Advani, CEO of Covestor, to serve as incoming Board Vice Chair. Both appointments will be effective June 1, 2015.

Bob Friedman began making plans in 2014 to step down from his role as Chair, with the intent of creating space for new leaders and new voices. Happily, this change in leadership in no way equates to a retirement for Bob. He remains an active member of the Board of Directors in his new role as Chair Emeritus, continues on in his staff role as CFED’s General Counsel, and his day-to-day focus on providing strategic guidance, thought leadership and ambassadorship for CFED and the field continues unabated.

Additional appointments to the Board of Directors include:

  • Naomi Gendler Camper, Managing Director, Office of Nonprofit Engagement, JPMorgan Chase & Co., New York, NY
  • Gary Cunningham, President & CEO, Metropolitan Economic Development Association, Minneapolis, MN
  • John J. “Jamie” Kalamarides, Senior Vice President, Prudential Retirement, Newark, NJ
  • Robin McKinney, Director & Co-Founder, Maryland CASH Campaign, Baltimore, MD

New leadership is emerging from within the organization as well. CFED has experienced unprecedented growth over the past two years, as the breadth, scope and impact of our work expands. Now, we’ve restructured the leadership of our mission-facing work, leading to the creation of three new Vice President positions. All three roles were filled from within, reflecting a level of staff development and bench strength of which we are deeply proud. Please join us in congratulating our new Vice President for Field Engagement, Jennifer Brooks; our new Vice President for Policy & Research, Jeremie Greer; and our new Vice President for Programs, Kate Griffin.

Yet, with all of this change, some things most assuredly have remained the same. It’s with deepest gratitude that we share that CFED President Andrea Levere has returned to work full-time, less than three months after being struck by a car and sustaining multiple serious injuries. Those of you who know anything about Andrea will not be surprised at the pace of her recovery, and we at CFED could not be more thrilled to have our fearless leader back in the saddle. Both she and the staff were heartened by the outpouring of support and well wishes from so many of you over the past several months – thank you!

As CFED completes a robust strategic planning process that will define the next chapter of our work, we could not be more excited about the potential brought by our new emerging leaders and the ways we might harness that leadership, in partnership with all of you, to achieve the kind of lasting change we seek in our communities most in need.
