This year, we’ve been focusing on identifying young people who are committed to social innovation. Part of our efforts have been directed toward bringing young people, aged 18 to 30, into the innovation@cfed platform by soliciting applications from that important group of innovative minds. From the dynamic group of applicants we’ve already had, it seems that there are some really interesting and fresh perspectives that expand economic opportunity for all Americans.
In another effort to develop the younger demographic within our community, I will be featuring on the innovation@cfed blog in the coming months groups of young social innovators who grab our attention. Today’s post includes the first of those groups – the Johns Hopkins University Social Innovation Partnerships (or, more simply, HOP-SIP).
Formed in 2008 by Dr. Phillip Leaf of the School of Public Health at Hopkins, Bill Tiefenwerth of the Center for Social Concern at Hopkins and Mindi Levin of the Student Outreach Resource Center at the Hopkins Medical Campus, HOP-SIP’s purpose is to promote social entrepreneurship across the JHU community. By linking faculty, staff, students and members of the Baltimore community, HOP-SIP provides technical expertise, seed funding and a broad community and governmental network to promote civic engagement and service-learning.
Last year, HOP-SIP was featured in the Johns Hopkins Gazette in a feature-length article highlighting some of their work. The article is fascinating and traces the development of social entrepreneurship at Hopkins.
As we work to engage young innovators, we’re looking for organizations that serve as an exemplar of the power of fresh perspectives. We think HOP-SIP fits that model, and we’re excited to feature their work.
Do you know of an organization, like HOP-SIP, that promotes the ability to young people to effect change in the world and expand economic opportunity? If so, let us know by using the comments section below so we can feature that organization in future posts!
