CFED mourns the loss of Chief Wilma Mankiller (1945-2010)

Wilma Mankiller, the first female chief of the Cherokee Nation, passed away Tuesday, April 6 at the age of 64 after a battle with cancer. This loss marks a sad day for all Americans who thirst for justice and equal opportunity. Her legacy as a lifelong advocate for all of the disadvantaged in our world will continue to light a path for reformers to come. Her radiant presence and exemplary leadership will be greatly missed.

CFED Competes for $1 Million Sam’s Club Grant

The Corporation for Enterprise Development (CFED), a national nonprofit dedicated to expanding economic opportunity, announced today it has been selected to participate in the Sam’s Club “Giving Made Simple” campaign, an online voting campaign where Sam’s Club Members and associates will determine how the company will allocate $4 million in charitable contributions to eight nonprofit organizations that support programs dedicated to education and small business development.

New Research Shows that Low-Income Homebuyers Using Matched Savings Accounts Are Better Able to Avoid Foreclosure and Subprime Loans

Low-income homeowners who participated in programs providing extensive financial education and matched savings on their down payments were two to three times less likely to lose their homes in the recent wave of foreclosure than similar families in the same communities, according to a study being released April 1 by the Corporation for Enterprise Development (CFED) and the Urban Institute.

CFED Self-Employment Tax Initiative Wins 2010 Community Reinvestment Award

The Self-Employment Tax Initiative (SETI), an initiative of the national nonprofit, Corporation for Enterprise Development (CFED), was recognized for its product innovation – using the annual income tax filing process to deliver business development services to low-income entrepreneurs – during the 2010 National Interagency Community Reinvestment Conference in New Orleans. The Citi Foundation received a 2010 Community Reinvestment Award for its support SETI. The Community Investment Award is presented to financial institutions that advance innovative solutions to the economic challenges facing lower-income communities.
