  • On November 1, CFED and USDA co-hosted the Bringing it All Home: USDA Programs for Manufactured Homes and Communities webinar, a dialogue about the importance of core USDA Rural Development grant and loan programs. Hear about the creative ways in which I’M HOME partners, working with their regional partners at USDA RD offices, have used these programs to promote manufactured housing as an affordable housing option in rural communities.   • On Friday, May 20, Bringing it All Home: Manufactured Housing and the Future of Affordable Housing convened in Washington, D.C. This exclusive, invitation-only event was co-sponsored by NeighborWorks America® with generous additional support from the Ford Foundation. This event brought together a small but distinguished audience of 85 key federal agency officials, industry representatives, legislative staff, leading national affordable housing nonprofits and more. This convening raised the visibility of our nonprofit partners’ use of manufactured housing in scalable strategies that promote long-term economic security for low- and moderate-income individuals and how federal affordable housing programs and subsidies can further these efforts.   • On April 27 at 2:00 PM EST, 100 viewers joined the National Consumer Law Center for a webinar co-sponsored by CFED’s Innovations in Manufactured Homes initiative to learn about legal approaches, tools and resources for dealing with the issues faced by elders living in manufactured homes. Panelists provided an overview of issues facing elders who live in manufactured homes and presented remedies and resources to solve those problems.   • On Wednesday, November 17, 2010, panelists on the Single-Family Financing for Manufactured Homes
    webinar discussed the state of single-family financing products for manufactured home buyers and their efforts to develop favorable alternatives. They explored the importance of conventional lending, gave a history of manufactured home financing and investigated other issues that determine the availability and quality of existing market products.   • On Thursday, September 2, 2010, speakers on the Local Policy to Preserve and Promote Manufactured Housing webinar discussed ways to use local policy to preserve and promote manufactured housing as an affordable housing option in your community. During this webinar, panelists provided an overview of local policies and how they relate to manufactured housing, including zoning, moratoriums and other local ordinances. The policy content of this webinar drew from the resource guide, Advocating at the Local Level, available on the Manufactured Housing Advocacy Center Toolkit page.   • On Wednesday, July 28, 2010, the Fundamental Freedoms in Manufactured Home Communities webinar highlighted the value of community living, the positive outcomes of an organized community and some basic tips on how to organize . The webinar also reviewed key policies that protect homeowner rights, including where different states stand on these policies. Click here to access the archived materials.
  • The Resident Ownership of Manufactured Housing Communities: Benefits & Policy Landscape Webinar, on June 16, 2010, highlighted the importance of this source of affordable housing, told the personal story of a homeowner from tenant to owner and provided an overview of the policies that support resident ownership, including where different states stand on these policies. The webinar also offered practical tips to homeowners and their supporters as well as provided information on other resources. Click on the link above to view the recorded webinar.
  • Promoting Quality, Affordability & Energy Efficiency Webinar: On Wednesday, January 27, 2010 CFED hosted a webinar devoted to strategies to use and leverage the homebuyer tax credit to replace pre-HUD Code mobile homes with ENERGY-STAR-rated manufactured homes. The status of other legislative proposals including funds provided in the Energy Bill and the potential Jobs Bill was also discussed. Click here for archived materials.

Past Events

  • On Thursday, November 11, 2010, Cheryl Sessions and Elliot Berry led a session co-sponsored by CFED called Transforming Manufactured Home Communities: Resident Ownership, Other Approaches, Where You Fit In at the NCLC's Consumer Rights Litigation Conference. This half-day intensive focused on resident ownership and other strategies to preserve and enhance what can be vibrant, high-quality, yet affordable housing. Speakers suggested ways that resident leaders, attorneys for residents, technical assistance providers, housing advocates, and non-profit and governmental housing organizations can work together to ensure that residents can gain control of their own communities.
  • On October 5th 2010, Laura Arce, Senior Policy Analyst for the Manufactured Housing program at CFED, served as a panelist during Maximizing Manufactured Housing Opportunities, a session at the 2010 National Council of State Housing Agencies Conference. Laura was featured on a panel with four other experts analyzing how HFAs are using new programs and leveraging funding to help families replace outdated mobile homes with newer, more energy-efficient models. The group also discussed resident groups and the purchase of manufactured housing communities as well as new financing options.
  • Partners in Innovation: Financing the Preservation of Rural and Urban Affordable Rental Housing, hosted by the National Housing Conference and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, was held on May 17, 2010 in Portland, OR. With a special focus on preservation finance, the forum brought together federal, state, and local officials, industry leaders, and advocates for a day-long discussion on current and future efforts to preserve and improve affordable rental housing both in the Northwest and across the nation.
  • The 2010 National Congress & Expo for Manufactured and Modular Housing was held April 13-15, 2010 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, Nevada. This is the largest annual national tradeshow for the manufactured housing and modular housing industry sectors. ROC USA sponsored the National Communities Council Forum.
  • On May 3, 2010, I'M HOME participated in the NeighborWorks America Rural Symposium held in New Orleans. The symposium was designed to highlight how the most promising innovations in three sectors — public, private and community-based nonprofit — have seasoned and disciplined community-based channels to quickly and effectively move capital into high value production.
  • On February 21, 2007, CFED and NeighborWorks America co-presented Changes in the Wind -- Manufactured Housing and the Future of Affordable Housing - a one-day symposium. The symposium celebrated five years of momentum building and programmatic breakthroughs in the nonprofit approach to this critical housing sector. Advocates, policy makers, and developers spent the day sharing lessons learned, promising practices, and their visions for the future.
